Our Aracomian of the Month: John Henderson, Class of 1942.
We all laughed when this young man from 7 & 8 Holden enlisted as a member of the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. John had never been in a body of water larger than the creek up by the Sulphur Springs Missionary Baptist Church nor had he ever been in a boat…and he was going out on the oceans???
Well today, John is a retired Lt. Colonel of the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers. Also, for over a decade, he served with distinction as president of the local chapter of NAACP in Reidsville, North Carolina. During his tenure at NAACP, John re-energized efforts in closing the gap Blacks experience in education, economic empowerment, health, civil rights and racial justice. In addition, for the past 11 years he has been a city councilman serving municipal government in Reidsville.
John has been married to his lovely wife, Ernestine, for 57 years. They have two children. Their son, Ilvarez, recently retired as environmental analyst for Duke Power Company and their daughter, Johnette, is the Executive Director of the Reedville’s Chamber of Commerce.
Seems like we who were laughing at John years ago were the ones all wet. From his rearing and background at Aracoma High School, over the years, John has left a thumb print on the events of our times. We are so proud of him.
This Ministry recognizes and congratulates John Henderson, Class of 1942 as Aracomian of the month.
Well fellow Aracomians, that’s all the News for this time.
I love you Your Brother in Christ,
Petris
