October 1, 1929
Dear Editor.
Please allow space for the
expression of a few thoughts, which perhaps, will be of interest to the many
friends and of parents of the Aracoma High School.
As a new comer in the community
and as principal of the above named school, permit me to speak of the wonderful
hospitality as well as the excellent cooperation that has been shown to me on
the part of the teachers when I came to Logan.
Three weeks are not long enough to
detennine the success or the failure of a faculty, but it is ample time to
determine the existing tr~nd. I wish to say that we have a very well qualified
teaching force.
Mr. R T. Jordan, who is a graduate of
Willberforce, has charge of Science department. Miss L. N. Griece, a graduate
Fisk University and who is working toward her master's degree in English at the
University of Cincinnati, has charge of the English department. Miss N. Wellman,
a graduate of Morgan College has charge of History. Miss R Adams, a graduate
West Virginia State College, has charge of the French department. Mr. H.
Robinson, also a graduate of West Virginia State College, is the director of
Physical education. Miss L. Bayes Willberforce is in charge of the upper grades
of the elementary department, while 1\1rs. L.E. Gilbert, a graduate of Swift
Memorial College has charge of the primary department. The principal, Mr. A. M.
Gilbert is a graduate of Howard University.
This will give you some idea of the
qualification of those who have been chosen by the Board of Education to assist
on shaping and molding of your children.
I am sure that these teachers a firm
determination to " put the job over and to accomplish big things this year. We
alone cannot do the work successfully. We ask the loyal support of you to help
us.
Our enrollment for the three weeks is
187. Ofthis number 63 are in the high school department and 124 in the
elementary department. We are looking forward to the time of getting into our
new building. The Junior High School students of Omar and Holden will be brought
to the new building. This will run the high school up to 115 students. We regret
that the new bqilding is not complete. However the community should offer
special congratulation to the Board of Education.
